But it's an asset to any room subject to excessive electromagnetic and/or radio-frequency interference (EMI/RFI). In general, the greater the distance between your room and the circuit breaker, and the greater the number of appliances in your home, the noisier your power will be. Beyond from its performance-enhancing Phase 3 PureFilter circuitry (more on that below), the PF30 offers over-voltage protection for its 12 grounded (3-prong) AC power outlets (up to 6,490 Joules) in addition to protection for 2 RJ-11 jacks (phone/Pay-per-View/DSL lines) and 3 RF coaxial connections: a cable line, a 10/100 broadband Internet modem, and any auxiliary device (24k gold-plated terminals, 1 each in and out). The conditioner cuts power to connected equipment when the incoming voltage reaches a dangerous level, then resets when the voltage returns to a safe level. There's a 15-amp thermal circuit breaker for manual resetting. And let's not forget Belkin's connected-equipment warranty, which covers damages up to $350,000. The PF30 offers Level 3 power protection, which should be suitable for most systems; it can reportedly withstand an electrical spike of more than 330,000 amps. (Belkin's Level 4 conditioners guard against up to 7,114 Joules and cover up to $500,000 in damage.) Many surge protectors will continue delivering power to your system even after their protective circuits have been disabled. If the PF30 takes a hit from a power surge larger than it can safely handle, it immediately stops passing current to your equipment. Setup and placement are straightforward. If you're not sure what to plug where, the unit's excellent manual spells it out clearly. There are separate, dedicated power filters for video gear, audio gear (including 2 Belkin HiCurrent outlets for high-power amplifiers), and digital components such as DVRs. A generous 12-foot, high-current 14-gauge power cable (Belkin's PureAV SD 750) and a supplied mounting kit simplify wall positioning. You can power 4 outlets on and off using a convenient top-panel button, or connect a DC remote trigger to toggle the switched outlets automatically (cable provided). The top panel is loaded with helpful LEDs: green indicators for voltage (anywhere from 95 to 140V), protection status, switch status, and, our favorite, a 10-segment amperage meter, which tells you how much current you're pulling at any given moment. Two red LEDs alert you to a ground fault and/or maximum-current condition, while a single blue LED signifies the conditioner's PureFilter status. According to Belkin, Phase 3 PureFilter circuitry eliminates line noise generated by hi-fi/home theater components as well as noise from fluorescent lighting and appliances like refrigerators, microwave ovens, laundry machines, furnaces, and hair dryers. The notion that the quality of your AC power (apart from any EMI/RFI) could affect sound and picture quality may seem improbable, but it makes more sense when you consider that the input at your speakers is itself, like the power driving your components, an alternating electric current. We tested the PF30 with a power-line analyzer that provides immediate, audible feedback on the noisiness of any given outlet via a built-in speaker and volume control. We confirmed the presence of very noisy ("dirty") power in our test environment. Plugging in the PF30 and plugging the analyzer into each of its AC outlets, we confirmed that the conditioner is indeed capable of zapping all but the faintest and most intermittent AC line noise. Did this make appreciable differences in our listening and viewing? Not surprisingly, yes, though far more so in our listening. With a mid-level sound system we heard greater extension at the frequency extremes (bass and treble) and smoother, less fatiguing sound akin to what we'd expect to hear when upgrading to a slightly more powerful, more sonically "transparent" audio amplifier. Images were smoother, more vivid. We auditioned the PF30 in a higher-end room with an existing (and more expensive) conditioner already in place and noticed little difference there, which recommends the PF30 as not merely high-quality, but high-value, too. The bottom line: If you've got a serious home theater pulling up to 15 Amps and 1,800 watts--or if you're merely looking for that degree of AC "headroom" and virtuoso AC line cleansing--this rig is definitely up to the job.
